We have arrived!
Six PM May 8
2012, we located our permanent summer campsite.
Ninilchik River Campground sits back away from the highway in a stand of
Spruce, Birch and Cottonwood. The campgrounds are very spacious but like most
remote campgrounds there are only a couple places to get water. We have a
faucet close to us and a restroom. There
is another on the upper part of the campgrounds where the other restroom is
located. There are 43 very spacious
campsites and one has a covered area to accommodate a large group.
There is a large population of Moose in the
area and one came down, after Chuck had cut wood for the fireplace, to sniff
around and check us out. The Rangers
Dave Perkins and Jacqui had told us to stay away from them as they can be
cantankerous, so we stayed in the trailer while she went through camp. We named her Lou Lou, as she is a loo loo, of
a Moose! We have seen her a couple times
passing through camp, so we stay alert while we are out walking.
We really
like our location and enjoyed seeing the sun go down on our first night at 11:
PM. The Moose have trimmed all of the
bushes so they look dead and the grass is yellow and dead but we know it will
be greening up real soon. There were still patches of snow around but nothing
on the roads.

May 9,
Wednesday
We all woke
up at 7:AM as Chuck wanted to ”Get Up” and make Coffee. Jane was enjoying her warm spot in bed so she
waited until the coffee was perked to slide out of bed. After they enjoyed
their oatmeal
Chuck was ready to start the day of unloading the stuff from the
trailer storage, I just sat there and wondered “Where did all the stuff come
from?” Then he started on the bed of the pickup, Oh My! He got the Solar panels working real well
and was glad the Sun was doing its part for the batteries. Jane was a bit concerned when she saw
everything scattered around but soon Chuck had it all stashed and back in
order. He was a little upset when he
found out that the water hose he brought from home was not long enough to hook
up to the water supply, but figured he could solve that problem when we went
into Soldotna for our orientation. There is a Fred Meyer and Walmart in that
town.
After lunch
C&J walked up to the Ranger station, about a half mile from our camp, but
left me at the trailer. They met with
Dave and Jaquie and toured the small ranger office. This is where they will be able to do laundry
and even take a “long hot” shower. On
the way back they watched a Moose cross the road right in front of them and
watched it until it wondered down over the hillside.
Later I
helped Chuck gathered wood and check out the Solar panels while Jane worked in
the trailer getting things back in order after the damage the very bumpy roads
did to her organized cupboards.
In the
afternoon Ranger Dave came by with the supplies and tools for the restroom and
a rake to clean up as needed. Jane
latched onto that rake right away and wouldn’t let Chuck have it. She raked for an hour or so while Chuck
gathered and chopped wood for the fire.
I’m thinking “Don’t they ever take a nap?”.
Jane got really excited while having dinner
as a Moose came right up to the picnic table and Chuck’s wood pile, then just
wondered through checking everything out. I guess we passed the inspection
because she didn’t look concerned about anything. They named her Lou Lou.
I could hear it raining in the night but we
were all snuggled down and the hum of the fan on the furnace lulled us to sleep
