May 3, 2012
Kitwanga is where we will go onto the Cassiar Hwy N. (Canada Hwy 37) and up to the Yukon Territory.
The sound of Commerce and industry woke us, as in the night a 18 wheel big rig pulled in beside us, and was now heading off to work. Dry camping in a truck stop was a good idea and we will do it again.
We saw our first Black bear about 20 miles out of Kitwanga as it zipped across the road.  Now we were really excited.  Just past Cranberry Junction we saw 3 more bears and a white owl flew alongside the road and we were able to see it very well.
C&J decided to go to Hyder Alaska/Stewart BC, a 37 mile road that was a turnaround trip. This is the area that is popular when the Salmon run in the Fall and the Bears come to do their own fishing.  We were told there were no Grizzly Bears in the area at this time but we did see a lot of Black Bear.  The drive was well worth the time spent as the weather was good and the snow covered hills and frozen lakes were spectacular.   We turned around in Hyder Alaska, which is the end of the road and started back to the main hwy by late afternoon.  We got fuel just across the street at Stewart BC and headed back up the canyon.  The beauty of the area is too hard to put in words, one must travel the road to see and feel its majesty.
In all we saw 11 bear, two Moose and a beautiful white hawk on the road that day.
